How to read this map — honestly

We count residents born in the Netherlands, not citizens.

Birth country is not nationality. The census measures country of birth, so our 62,007 figure cannot be read as a citizen count. It includes people born in the Netherlands who now hold Spanish or another citizenship, while Dutch citizens born outside the Netherlands are not counted in this layer.

It also has a floor, not a ceiling: second-generation blindness. A family from the Netherlands that raises children born in Spain does not add those children to this layer. We show birth country anyway because it is the consistent, town-level, annually updated measure available for the birth-country origins — and label it precisely.
